Abstract | Selected biographic and demographic characteristics of the 15,168 students enrolled at Montgomery College for fall 1977 were analyzed. Analysis showed: (1) the mean age for all students was 26.06 years; (2) 55% were female; (3) 71% were white, 8% black, 1% Spanish-American, and 14% foreign born; (4) 90% were Montgomery county residents; (5) approximately 19% of county public high school students entered the college in the fall following high school graduation, along with 4% of private school and 9% of parochial school graduates; (6) the average continuing college student had earned 12 credits; (7) 47% were non-matriculated, 39% were freshmen, and 14% sophomores; (8) just under one-third of the student body were enrolled in transfer and general education programs, while one-fifth were career students; (9) the modal credit hour load was three credits; (10) average grade point average was 2.6; (11) 771 were veterans, a level on par with the previous year's total of 773; (12) approximately one-fourth planned to graduate during the current year; and (13) two-thirds were employed, with the majority holding full-time jobs; 37% reported employment in fields related to their studies. Data on student characteristics by campus (Rockville, Takoma Park, and Germantown) and profiles of credit and non-credit community services students are included. (TR) |
